500 register for annual Law Day run
3-year-olds also get into the act

It was a windy 52 degrees when the seventh annual Law Day 5K Run/Walk was officially started by St. Clair County Circuit Judge Milton Wharton on Saturday.
For some, the temperature was OK for running, but many said the high winds were a problem for them.
Jackson Marwa, who won the event last year, brought his 3-year-old daughter, Alexa Marwa, to the event so she could win a medal like her daddy.
"I've been running since the event started," Marwa said. "She always stood on the side cheering me on. But she likes to run, and it's been my dream for her to win a medal. Today, she did that. She ran 300 meters."
Isaac Trapp, also 3, was eager to show off his medal.
"I'm a winner. Let's go get cookies, Daddy," he said. His father, Dan Trapp, is an avid runner.
"I am part of the Belleville Running Club," Trapp said. "I want my son to know that exercise is important, so we're startng early. And he enjoys running."
The event is hosted by the St. Clair County Bar Association and raises money for Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation.
The Law Day run was started by Angie Vassen in 2002.
"I like to run, and I wanted to do something for the legal community and the public, too," Vassen said.
Nearly 500 people registered for this year's run. And 9-year-old William Zoughaib of Belleville won the 5K run in the youth division.
The overall winner was Jason Olszowka with a time of 15 minutes, 58 seconds. The top women's runner was Candace Caveny at 19:24.
Helen Alexander-Kratz, 45, was the women's masters champion at 21:12. She said this was the third time she has won this division.
Alexander-Kratz said she started running when she was 21 so she could eat anything she wanted to.
Winning Saturday's run was fun, she said. But she added, "I am getting slower every time. That's a little depressing."
Alexander-Kratz, of St. Louis, said she continues to participate in the Belleville event "because they put on a good run here every year." She said her focus now is more on triathlons.
Dan Rooney, 47, of O'Fallon, was the men's masters champion at 17:59. He's participated in the run since 2004 and said he likes the historic downtown scenery.
Stanley Franklin Sr. brought his three sons, Stanley Franklin Jr., 18; Dakari Franklin, 12; and Amani Franklin 10, because "It's a great family event."
"My sons thought they could not train and beat me," said Stanley Franklin Sr. "I beat my oldest son by a whole minute. Dakari was on a bicycle yesterday, and I beat him, too."
Stanley Franklin Jr., a freshman at Tennessee State University, in Nashville,Tenn., smiled and said that won't be the story next time. He vowed to train and eat right to beat his dad next year.
Lois Wood, executive director of Land of Lincoln at 8787 State St. in East St. Louis, said the organization provides free legal help in civil cases to low-income individuals and senior citizens.
Wood said the money the organization receives from the run "helps a lot because we try to provide help to as many people we can in a five-county area with the most critical legal problems, and we don't have enough money. We try to raise money to increase our services."
The organization helps people with problems such as foreclosures, illegal lockouts by landlords and Medicaid, Wood said.
